Hytale Mod Jam January 2026: Our Submission

The Hytale Mod Jam kicked off this January and we couldn't resist jumping in. After 48 hours of building, testing, and iterating, we're proud to share what we came up with: the Rover.

Meet the Rover

A compact combat rover that mirrors your movement and fights at your side — a living echo of lost machine intelligence. Built as a relic of forgotten tech, it reactivates to follow, protect, and respond to the player like an "echo" brought back to life.

The Rover companion in action

The concept started from a simple question: what if you had a companion that didn't just follow you around, but actually mirrored your intent? The Rover watches how you move, where you look, and what you engage with — then acts accordingly.

How It Works

The Rover is designed around three core behaviors:

  1. Movement Mirroring — it tracks your velocity and heading, staying in formation without feeling robotic
  2. Combat Response — when threats appear, it engages alongside you with its own attack patterns
  3. Idle Awareness — even when nothing's happening, it scans the environment and reacts to nearby entities

The result is something that feels less like a pet and more like a partner.

The Lore

We leaned into the idea of forgotten machine intelligence. The Rover is a relic — something left behind by a civilization that no longer exists. When a player discovers and reactivates it, there's this sense of bringing something back to life. It doesn't speak, it doesn't emote in obvious ways, but its behavior tells a story.

Try It Yourself

What's Next

The Mod Jam was a blast and a great excuse to push ourselves on entity AI and companion design. We're taking what we learned here and applying it to some bigger projects in the pipeline.
